Yodl vs Hypercare: clinical messaging vs simple team chat (2026)

Short answer

Hypercare is clinical communication for hospitals and clinics: secure messaging plus on-call schedules, role-based routing, code team activations and pager replacement, with a signed Business Associate Agreement (BAA) on paid plans. Yodl is simple team chat, $10 a month for 5 users with a signed BAA. If your team has an on-call rotation, pages people or needs code team alerts, Hypercare is built for that; otherwise Yodl is cheaper and simpler.

At a glance

Protected health information (PHI) is any detail that identifies a patient and relates to their health or care. A BAA is the contract HIPAA requires from a vendor before it handles PHI. Hypercare prices are as of November 2026 from hypercare.com/pricing, which shows two unlabeled price sets under an annual and monthly toggle, so we show both. Prices change; verify there.

Pricing in detail

Yodl has one plan: $10 a month for 5 users, 1 location, 20 GB and a signed BAA. Extra users are $2 each, an extra location is $10 with 5 more users and 20 more GB, and the API is $20 a month. Month to month, no free trial.

Hypercare has three paid plans and a trial. Starter is shown at $8 USD a month, with a second price set on the same page at $10 USD; Plus is $15 or $19 USD; Enterprise is custom. The page does not label which number is annual and which is monthly, so the lower figures are most likely annual. The price is listed per month without the words per user, but Hypercare says it sells per user or per bed, so 5 people on Starter is about $40 to $50 a month and on Plus about $75 to $95.

Starter includes secure messaging with a signed BAA. Plus adds on-call schedules, code team activations and integration with existing systems. Enterprise adds APIs with integration specialists and bed-based pricing with unlimited users. Pager replacement is $10 USD a month per paid user. Two terms to read first: cancellation yields account credits rather than refunds, and plans under $5,000 a year must be paid by credit card.

HIPAA and the BAA

HIPAA requires a BAA before a vendor handles PHI (45 CFR 164.502(e) and 164.308(b)). HIPAA does not certify software; the BAA plus your policies and training is the full picture.

Hypercare's pricing page says Starter, Plus and Enterprise ensure HIPAA compliance with a signed Business Associate Agreement, and describes the product as HIPAA and PHIPA compliant messaging; PHIPA is Ontario's health privacy law. The trial is excluded from the BAA, and the page does not detail encryption, so ask on the demo.

Yodl signs a BAA with every customer on every plan, including the $10 plan. It is encrypted in transit and at rest, hosted on HIPAA-eligible infrastructure with subprocessor BAAs, and not end-to-end encrypted, by design, so that search, retention, audit and admin controls work, the same model Slack and Microsoft Teams use.

Where Hypercare is the better choice

Hypercare is the better choice when your team has an on-call rotation. Plus carries on-call schedules and role-based routing, so a message goes to whoever is covering tonight. Code team activations alert a defined group at once, and the pager replacement add-on moves pagers onto phones for $10 USD a month per paid user. Yodl has channels and @mentions, not schedules or routing.

It is also the better choice when chat must connect to hospital systems: Plus lists integration with existing systems, and Enterprise provides APIs and bed-based pricing with unlimited users for a hospital that counts beds rather than seats. Teams with Ontario sites get PHIPA compliance alongside HIPAA.

Where Yodl is the better choice

Yodl is the better choice for an office that needs organized chat and admin control, not clinical routing. A dental practice, a physical therapy clinic, a med spa or a small primary care office rarely has a code team or an on-call pager; it has a front desk, a clinical team and an owner. Yodl gives those teams channels per team or location, threads, direct messages, 20 GB of files, full-text search, and Viewer roles for people who should read but not post.

It is also cheaper and clearer for 5 to 15 people: $10 a month covers 5 users and the BAA, and a 10-person office pays $20, against about $40 to $50 for 5 on Hypercare Starter. Yodl is month to month; Hypercare's cancellation terms give account credits, not refunds. Yodl's admin controls sit in one panel made for a practice manager; Hypercare's pricing page does not describe such controls, so ask on the demo.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hypercare HIPAA compliant?

Hypercare's paid plans (Starter, Plus and Enterprise) include a signed BAA, and the vendor describes the product as HIPAA and PHIPA compliant messaging; the 90-day trial has no BAA. HIPAA does not certify any app.

How much does Hypercare cost for 5 users?

As of November 2026, Starter is shown at $8 USD a month with a second price set at $10 USD, unlabeled as annual or monthly; read as per user, that is about $40 to $50 a month for 5. Prices change; verify on hypercare.com.

Does Yodl have on-call schedules or pager replacement?

No. Yodl has channels, threads, direct messages, @mentions and roles, not on-call schedules, role-based routing, code team activations or pager replacement.

Can I get a refund from either?

Yodl is month to month, so cancelling stops future charges; the current month is not refunded. Hypercare's pricing page says cancellation yields account credits, not refunds.
